A little Google Earth halloween fun

The Google Earth blog posted about how you can turn your google earth experience into this special halloween edition.  Download this kmz file and open it up in Google Earth. You’ll see the earth in a whole new way.  Make sure to use the ShareThis button below to pass this around to others.

Can’t Get to the Game - let Google take you

EarthSwoop can take you there with some really cool trips to each of the NFL stadiums.  The 3D realism is close to the real things.  No smell of beer or rowdy fans.  No live action.  No cheerleaders.  No bad calls.

Facebook and ShareThis

I just reconnected with a good friend from college this past week on Facebook.  Tim and I used to play in a band together called “Skydiver” named shortly after we all went skydiving.  We caught up by phone this past week and it was like 20 years hadn’t just passed.  Our drummer was Mike Zimmerman, Tim’s cousin, who lives in Nashville now and plays with Tracy Byrd.  Just talked to him too.  Anyway, Tim tells me about this little company he’s founded called ShareThis.  ShareThis is one of the coolest new widgets out there because it allows you to do in one step what used to take several.  Now you can send a url directly from the page with a single click.  Already saving lots of time.  Oh, and did I mention Tim’s got the attention of some big players looking at what he’s doing.  Try ShareThis on your blog.  You’ll have the capability to track who has shared your stuff with some really cool analytics reports.  I highly recommend it to all the Watercooler Wednesday folks at Ethos.

Wordpress update

I recently updated my Wordpress software to 2.6. This last few months have seen a flurry of updates with the latest and greatest. The update process is pretty easy now. The biggest change that affected me on this one is the image add/edit area. I have to manually type in a float style because my template was written before some of the latest W3C standards were written. It only affects new image inserts.  That’s about all though. I’m liking the interface. Template modification is a breeze too.

So if you are updating Wordpress, don’t forget to backup your mySQL database. And whatever you do, don’t overwrite your config.php file. I did once and trust me, it’s not a happy day when you do that.

DSL Direct Works Great

Moving into the country means connectivity limitations. In some cases. Although I’ve got a Franklin mailing address, I’m not exactly in the city limits anymore. For example there is no comcast out my way. I’ve never had comcast and I’ve heard few good things about them. So no loss there. DirecTV is in since I’ve got a decent view of the southern sky. So then the question is what to do about high speed internet? When we moved we decided we weren’t going to have a home phone anymore. Mobile phones would be it. Couple things come up in this scenario. The options are limited with internet connectivity. And what happens if our sitter has to call 911 for some reason?

Problem solved: AT&T has a DSL version for home use if you don’t have a traditional phone plan. You won’t find it on the main site under standard options either. It’s called FastAccess DSL Direct and you’ll have to actually speak to someone to sign up for it. I’ve got a link for it here. There are a couple of versions to choose from, however I’ve got the lowest speed version which is 768k and it’s plenty fast enough. With DSL Direct there are no FCC, 911, or other taxes charged so your bill is a flat rate $19.95 a month. And setup was a breeze. Even with a Linksys router configured for wireless throughout the house.

What’s more is that you can hook up a landline phone to the system and it will accept outgoing calls to 911. So you get the best of both worlds. No home phone but still get 911. High speed internet too. Plus there is a good chance of getting a better deal on your cable or other digital TV service without having to bundle things.

Nashville gets Street View imagery

Google has just updated Nashville Maps with street view imagery. Check it out here. Look for the streets with blue highlight. Click the Street View tab at the top. Move the little man around and rotate the image that pops up. Full 360 degree views. LP Field is a good look. Check out Opryland Hotel too.

Google Maps - gone too far?

Perhaps one of the funniest takes on intrusion.

Firefox gets a facelift

Firefox 2Catch the latest release of Firefox. Version 2.0 just came out and it is a few leaps over its predecessor. The first thing you’ll see is and change to the tabs. Now there is an X to close it (if you aren’t into the CTRL-T and CTRL-W keystrokes, this is a nice add). The button images are updated too.

One of my favorite add-on extensions to Firefox is FireFTP. This is a neat FTP program that operates as a new tab and allows you to save FTP account info for multiple servers. If you use FTP alot, this is a good way to go.

AVG releases latest Free Anti Virus app

j0403442.jpg A few months ago, my AVG Free AntiVirus application began showing a popup when I booted up my PC. The popup seemed to state that the free version was going away and that I would have to purchase an upgrade. I hunted high and low on their website and couldn’t find any info on whether a free version would still be available. I was really bummed because I really love the app.

Well, I am not sure if they had a backlash from loyal customers, but just recently the January 15th deadline for upgrading was moved to February 18th. And they are going to have a free version with the new release of AVG 7.5.

I really like AVG and recommend it to anyone. I used to use Symantec Norton Antivirus, but found it too processor-intensive and it added a good 5 minutes to my bootup times. I realized that only after I uninstalled it and replaced it with AVG.

You can get AVG Free HERE. Keep in mind, AVG Anti-Virus Free is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only.

As a final note, make sure you have a virus program that does both real-time file checking and incoming/outgoing email scanning. Make sure you keep your virus lists up to date on a daily basis and be sure to run a full system scan on a regular basis, like every Saturday. Most anti-virus programs set these up by default. AVG does.

Have you been there?

confluence.jpg

The goal of the Degree Confluence project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures, and stories about the visits, will then be posted to the website (www.confluence.org). Take a look and you’ll be amazed at how this has caught on around the world. All you need to have is a GPS unit and a camera. Take a picture of your surroundings then a snapshot of your GPS device screen showing the precise lat/lon coordinate of your location and you’ve marked your spot on the globe. But hurry, locations are going fast. Reserve your spot in history today.
