A month of Mondays

Where did the last 30 days go?  I just noticed that a month has elapsed since my last post.  What gives?

For starters, my occupation provides a never ending source of manageable stress that I let get a little out of hand.  Not good.  Combine that with one of those nasty virus bugs going around and the old body got a little out of whack.  You know like when it just starts to shut down.

All is back on track now thanks to some specific and intentional changes with work and play.  I’m hopeful that what I enjoy doesn’t have to play second fiddle again to misguided perceptions of expectations.

Wordpress update

I recently updated my Wordpress software to 2.6. This last few months have seen a flurry of updates with the latest and greatest. The update process is pretty easy now. The biggest change that affected me on this one is the image add/edit area. I have to manually type in a float style because my template was written before some of the latest W3C standards were written. It only affects new image inserts.  That’s about all though. I’m liking the interface. Template modification is a breeze too.

So if you are updating Wordpress, don’t forget to backup your mySQL database. And whatever you do, don’t overwrite your config.php file. I did once and trust me, it’s not a happy day when you do that.

The New Icon Tact - a work in progress

new logoWelcome to my new and improved Icon Tact blog. This is really a source for all that I’m doing now. It’s a work in progress as I’ve had to migrate all of my settings from the original site to this one. This site runs on Wordpress now instead of Movable Type and Typepad. Is so much easier to work with from plugins to widgets to just general maintenance. Oh, and it’s free with my hosting plan. So I get the domain name, email addresses, my own server space, and more for under $10 a month.  Can’t beat that.  Please adjust your bookmarks.

Going from Movable Type to Wordpress is fun

yeah right. actually I’ve switched because I like WordPress a whole lot better. The most recent update to 2.5 is really nice. the interface is simple. updating is a breeze. Oh and did I mention its free with most web hosting platforms these days.

New blog

My latest endeavor is a job change to a Nashville based GIS firm called GEO-Jobe GIS Consulting. I’m managing sales for the firm and I’m having a great time. We just got “The GEO-Jobe Blog” up and running and it is one to check out if you are at all interested in maps, GIS, and GPS.

JSE at Henpeck

DSCN2667.JPGI finally got some pictures of John Scott Evans and me playing out a few weekends back. This pictures features the band (Glenn Williams on percs, Me, Rich Eckhardt (Toby Keith’s guitarist), and John. We are playing at a really neat restaurant/grocery store/gas station/hangout called Henpeck Market. It was the first time John and I played together in a few years and it was good. Rich made it out and put in some great licks.
DSCN2683.JPGHere we are pictured with Henpeck owner’s Don and Jackie Gregory. Also pictured is friend and dobro extraordinaire Chris Joslin who sat in on a bunch of tunes.

All in all, it was a great night. For more info on JSE or to purchase a CD, visit John’s MySpace page HERE.

John Scott Evans to play Franklin/Spring Hill this weekend only

JSE.jpgMy friend John Scott Evans will be playing at three locations this weekend only. John’s music has touched many around the world. He is currently causing quote a stir in the LA jazz scene with his latest CD called “Above the Sun”. We’ve put a small combo together to back him up which includes some great local players. You can get a sample of John’s music at his MySpace page.

Here is the local tour info:

Friday Night, October 26th - Henpeck Market, Franklin, TN 6-8pm. This is a very intimate setting so get there early and come hungry because Henpeck owner’s Don and Jackie Gregory cook up some fantastic meals. HERE is a link for info and directions to Henpeck Market.

Saturday Night, October 27th - Saxby’s Coffee shop, Spring Hill, TN 7:30-9:30pm. Saxby’s has become a great friend to local musician’s in Spring Hill and they’ve opened up the evening to JSE’s music. Saxby’s will fill up quickly so come early. They have a great mix of coffee and other cafe drinks. Saxby’s is located on Rt 31 on the right just as you enter Spring Hill from the north.

Sunday Morning, October 28th - The People’s Church, Franklin, TN - 9:15am and 11am. John will be playing at both services and doing a few of his own arrangements of some classics. HERE is a link to The People’s Church.

Russian Jazz Clubs

We were fortunate to play some prominent jazz clubs. American’s playing jazz music is always a big draw. We just happened to have a very tight band that blew the doors out wherever we went. More than the music though, our new friends on more than one occasion used the Russian term pronounced “svyetli” to describe us. It is a word which means radiant light. So it was more than the music. Mission accomplished with delayed fruition.

Here is the Art Club in Tomsk. A small restaurant bar devoted to jazz music, they gave us the floor for a few hours. It was smoky but we had a great crowd. People payed money to hear us and all of the proceeds went to a local children’s charity.

We all signed our name on the brick wall.

Here is the club manager, also a fellow bass player. Don’t recall his name.

In Moscow, we played at the Union of Composers jazz club on two evenings. This place had a really cool vibe and a great sound system.
