Theron meets Arthur Scopic

j0407119.jpgNext Tuesday is the big day. My knee injury originally occurred in October. Through a series of typical insurance delays, I am know getting my day in court so to speak. I go under the knife to have my medial meniscus defragged so it works like normal again. No more sitting around the house and keeping it elevated. That is, at least after it heals. I’m told it could be anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. The doc calls it “significant tearing”. We’ll see. So on the morning of January 2, i will encounter Mr. Scopic for the first time.

Ever had this type of surgery? What was it like for you? I’ve heard from many who have had nearly identical conditions.

Sanibel Island is one of the best places to find exotic shells. I happen to be updating my blog as the waves crash over my feet. A miracle of modern technology. As the tide rolls out, the sandy beach displays hidden treasures in the form of conches and other interesting sea life.

Christmas eve brunch

Christmas eve brunch

We had a great brunch today with my family and some cousins I haven`t seen in a while. Marker 4 is a great place right in Venice FL. It is one of the few restaurants on the water in Venice. Had a southwestern grouper sandwich. Pretty good fare. Venice is a beautiful city with a rich history. Like its famous sister city, water flows in waterways through much of the downtown area. It`s a great spot to visit if you are in the area.

Christmas in Florida

For the first time ever we will be spending Christmas week in Osprey, FL where my folks have a place. The weather is beautiful and the ocean is just a stones throw away. I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

A visit to the dentist

j0337303.jpgI visited the dentist today for my 6 month checkup. I grew up with a dentist dad who has since retired. I had the same hygienist from as young as I can remember right up through college. She knew everything I had gotten into based on the stains found at each cleaning. This was especially evident as I learned from guys like Clinton on how not to inhale. Problem is some of that stuff still got on the teeth even though it didn’t get into the lungs. I paid her to not tell my dad. That worked pretty well.

No cavities today. I’ve actually never had any. My teeth are metal free. This was not because my dad was a dentist. You can check some of my siblings teeth to know that good teeth are not genetic. What really made me realize that I wanted good teeth was a sign my dad had hanging by the front door.

Ignore your teeth and they will go away.

That was enough for me. Well that and seeing some messed up stuff he dealt with each day from people not taking care of the choppers.

The hard thing about getting your teeth clean is knowing what to eat first after they have been polished. That clean feeling you get when you run your tonque over them is but for a fleeting moment once you have your first bite of real food. I went for a Diet Coke which still felt kind of funny.

So don’t forget to keep those teeth clean. Unlike kids teeth, you don’t get a new set when your adult teeth fall out. I take that back, you can get a new set, just not the original issue and not free.

Was Herod just doing his job?

Historians estimate that somewhere between 30 and 40 infants between the ages of newborn and 2 years old were targets of King Herod in his failed attempt to prevent a boy from becoming a king. In a desparate move to retain his control, this paranoid man sent a death squad to the small town of Bethlehem with orders to kill. You see, his crafty dealings with some astrologers from afar, who first reported the birth of the babe, were thwarted when they, after being warned in a dream, didn’t return to reveal the exact location of the child. The 2 year old age span came using times estimated from the Magi. So what other choice did he have but to annihilate. There were many boy kings throughout the ages. Some as young as eight years old. Children in some societies were considered expendable and sometimes even used for sacrifices. History shows that in the millenia that preceded this time, infanticide was common. It wasn’t until later centuries that the value of a child, regardless of social standing, political climate, condition, defect, or otherwise, was seen in a positive light. Today experimentation still exists with conditional acceptance of unborn and newborn.

Though today’s unwanted ones could be seen to pose a “threat” to an indivduals “control” over her dominion, is it right to send a death squad, clothed in doctor’s garb, to the bedside to accomplish the dirty deed. I’m left to consider all of the “what could have been” scenario’s of a life snuffed out before a breath was even had.

Herod in the end became crazy claiming himself to be God. The boy claiming to be God ended up saving us all, or at least those of us with enough sense to recognize the hope he brings for today and tomorrow. That manure infested birth, made so pretty by Hallmark, was a horrible way to enter the world. But if out of those humble beginnings redemption is made possible, I’ll take it.
